Structural Steel Barriers, coatings and claddings and vapour permeability problems

When moisture gets into the structural steel, which is the heart of a building or engineering construction, it causes problems, damage, corrosion, weakness and possibly even failure.  Keeping liquid water out is relatively easy with a simple barrier – but keeping water vapour out is actually impossible and the vapour can and does permeate through every material.  Worse still, once through it condenses and is trapped there as a liquid.

There is no perfect solution – but you can reduce the problem with optimised coatings, claddings and materials – albeit a bridge, tunnel, dam, skyscraper or simple building. And that's where Versaperm comes in with its ultra-sensitive range of Vapour Permeability Meters.

Part of the problem is that permeability is not only affected by materials and environments, but also by the way any cladding, coatings or barriers are manufactured and applied.

The latest Versaperm vapour permeability system measures this to an accuracy in the Parts Per Million (PPM) to PPB range and can go beyond water vapour to measure acidic or reactive gases as well as all common ones such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. It can determine the permeability of material and systems ranging from a simple cladding through to a film, laminate or coating including under a wide range of environmental, diurnal and seasonal conditions.

Traditionally, measuring vapour permeability has been very expensive and could take several weeks, but with the latest product range from Versaperm it can now be done in as little as thirty minutes for some products and vapours, at the same time as producing increasingly more accurate measurements.

As well as the equipment itself, Versaperm also offers a fast turn-around laboratory-based vapour permeability measurement service and a technical consultancy.
